Korean Cinema Club

Overview

Welcome to the Korean Cinema Club!

We screen landmark Korean films in an intimate setting, then spend time unpacking the history, culture, and human stories behind them.

Korean Cinema Club is a space for anyone who wants to understand Korea more deeply through film — not just by watching, but by talking, listening, and exchanging perspectives.

No film degree required. No Korean language skills needed.
Just bring your curiosity about Korea!

This Is for You If…

  • You’ve watched Korean films alone and wished there was someone to talk to afterward.

  • You want to understand the Korean history and cultural context behind what you’re watching.

  • You want a thoughtful but casual discussion that helps you connect with Korean culture on a deeper level.

  • You’re interested in both Korean culture and film, but don’t want anything too academic or heavy.

  • You want a genuine cultural exchange that actually stays with you.

What to Expect

Our discussions are guided, relaxed, and beginner-friendly — a little like a casual introduction to Korean Studies mixed with an introduction to Film Studies.

We’ll talk about the film itself, but also the cultural background, social context, historical references, and everyday Korean perspectives behind it. The goal is not to “analyze perfectly,” but to understand, share, and connect.

Community Mix

Korean Cinema Club welcomes both international and Korean participants. We aim to create a balanced space for mutual cultural exchange, ideally with around a 50/50 mix of international and Korean participants.

We believe this balance allows international members to hear more diverse Korean perspectives, while Korean members can also share, reflect, and connect with people from different cultural backgrounds.

What’s Included

  • Watching a selected Korean film with Korean audio & English subtitles

  • Welcome drink: coffee, tea, or soft drink

  • Program card with background information

  • Guided in-depth discussion after the screening

Your Host

Mina (she/her)

  • An English & Korean-speaking bilingual

  • A Korean film producer with a Master’s Degree in Film from the UK

  • A Seoul local who has lived abroad for 10+ years — and knows what it feels like to navigate another country & culture. Believe me!

Participant & Event Policy

Korean Cinema Club is a space for learning, conversation, and cultural exchange through Korean cinema. To help everyone have a meaningful and comfortable experience, we ask all participants to keep the following in mind.

Language

Conversational English level is required for the discussion.

You do not need to speak perfect English, and you do not need any Korean language skills. However, since the post-screening discussion is held in English, participants should be comfortable sharing their thoughts and listening to others in conversational English.

Community Balance

Korean Cinema Club welcomes both international and Korean participants.

We aim to create a balanced community, ideally with around a 50/50 mix of international and Korean participants. This helps us bring more diverse perspectives into the discussion and create a richer space for mutual cultural exchange.

Please note that the exact ratio may vary depending on each event.

Event Schedule & Punctuality

Doors open 30 minutes before the event begins.

The first 10 minutes of the event will be used for introductions and greetings. After that, the film screening will begin, followed by a guided discussion.

Please arrive on time so that we can begin smoothly and avoid disrupting the screening experience for other participants.

Participation

This club works best when everyone comes ready to connect!

You do not need to be a film expert or have a “perfect” answer. We simply ask that you come with curiosity, listen actively, and join the conversation in a way that feels comfortable for you. Active participation is what makes this space meaningful!

Respect & Open-Mindedness

Korean Cinema Club is about understanding different cultures, perspectives, and experiences.

Please be respectful, thoughtful, and open-minded toward other participants. People may have different cultural backgrounds, opinions, or levels of familiarity with your culture.

We ask everyone to help us keep the space safe, welcoming, and kind.

Minimum Participants

The event may be cancelled or rescheduled if the minimum number of participants is not met.

In this case, all attendees will be notified, and anyone who cannot attend the rescheduled event will receive a full refund.

Photos

Photos may occasionally be taken during the event for community and promotional purposes.

If you prefer not to appear in any photos, please let the host know before the event begins. We will do our best to respect your preference.

Community & Connection

Mina and the team are here to guide the session and hold the space, but the connections you make are your own.

We hope the Korean Cinema Club can be more than just a film screening — a place where conversations continue, friendships grow, and people feel part of a thoughtful community.
